15 years later, dev releases source code of cancelled Game Boy Color RPG

August 16, 2016 | By Alex Wawro

More than a decade after shutting down, defunct video game studio Affinix Software has briefly returned from the dead to release a ROM and the source code for its cancelled Game Boy Color RPG Infinity.

It's a notable attempt to highlight and historically preserve a good bit of game development work that never saw the light of day, since after "months of negotiation" Crave Entertainment declined to publish the game (estimated to be roughly 90 percent complete) in 2001.

Affinix closed up shop shortly thereafter, and the staff scattered to the four winds -- most don't even appear to work in the game industry anymore. However, the company's website has remained online and someone has sporadically updated it -- once in 2007, and then again on Saturday to release the Infinity ROM and code.

"The game is in mostly the same state as it was when we stopped developing it in 2001, but with some recent polishing (bugfixes, missing assets added, typos corrected, etc)," reads Saturday's post. "The ROM is configured to end about a quarter of the way through, before you encounter any incomplete areas, and thus we've labeled it as a preview."

Devs curious for more details about the project should note that the website was updated again this morning to announce that one or more members of Affinix will be answering questions via Reddit's "Ask Me Anything" subreddit at 1 PM Pacific today.
